Iowa Teens Volunteer at Findlay Market Location

Coming from Riverside, Iowa, Anna Strabala, 16 and Megan Metz, 15 face little adversity in the small town with a population of less than 1,000. Participating in a six-day service trip to Cincinnati, Iowa St. Mary's teens are working with Chatfield College, St. Johns, Matthew 25 Ministries and Visions Child Care service all in an attempt to better the local Over-the-Rhine community and help struggling locals receive an education at Chatfield.

The Iowa crew helped clean the Chatfield College Findlay Market location to gear up for a record-high number of students entering school in the fall.

“We are delighted to have terrific young people here with us to help us achieve our mission of providing an education to those who might otherwise not have the opportunity,” said Wanda Hill, site director for Chatfield's Findlay Market Campus.

The St. Mary's youth works in cooperation with Franciscans for the Poor and along with completing service opportunities; the teens interact with community members and learn first hand about their struggles.

“I always looked down on homeless people and thought I could never end up in that situation. After meeting the people living on the streets and hearing their stories, I realized it could really happen to anyone. It's nice to see these people at Chatfield actually getting to receive a college education,” says Strabala.

The Cincinnati service trip is the first volunteer stop for the two St. Mary's teens. After spending time with members of the Chatfield community, Anna and Megan hope to continue with service efforts to better local communities and help the less fortunate overcome adversity and receive a college education.

“We can always use the help, and I am sure they are experiencing first-hand the rewards of volunteering their time " everyone's most precious asset,” says Hill.
